Golden Eagles’ Nests are again being monitored this year by cameras beaming live pictures to a large screen in the Assynt Visitor Centre in Lochinver. The system was set up in early 2011 to record the nest of a local pair of Golden Eagles, but unfortunately they have failed to co-operate for two consecutive years. With the cameras already in place for 2013, everyone hopes it will be third year lucky!!
In 2012 the cameras were moved to an active Buzzard nest and great entertainment was provided by the feeding of frogs, voles, lizards, a mole and even an adder to the three chicks.
Assynt and the North West Highlands are safe havens for birds of prey, and several local golden eagles have been satellite tagged so that their journeys, activities and positions can be monitored. For more info see: http://www.roydennis.org/animals/raptors/golden-eagle
