Rock Carvings

In the old days carving names, initials and pictures with a small hammer and chisel on to exposed rock was quite common. We have many here on the roadside on either side of our entrance on the B869 and we are also very close to the most famous local carvings just north of here on the Clachtoll Peat Road (built as a destitution road during the mid 19thC ¬†famine). The example in the photo is extensively carved and slightly ¬†higher up from the road. There is also reputed to be a “coffin stone” here, a resting place for the funeral procession, but we have yet to discover the location.
