  About Cathair Dhubh

This small secluded estate of holiday cottages established in 1993 is situated a few miles north of the attractive fishing village of Lochinver. The cottages themselves are situated in the valley well away from the public road, making the best of their positions, all with panoramic coastal views.

Cathair Dhubh looks out over Achmelvich Bay and is set against an awesome backdrop of sandstone mountains, with names that roll from the tongue of any walker - Quinag, Suilven, Canisp.

These ancient hills contain some of the oldest rocks anywhere in the world and they form quite a unique landscape.

In the hills along the coast, the wildlife and birdlife are as impressive as the scenery, black throated divers, otters, red deer, seals, porpoise and seabirds are but a few of the local inhabitants. For those prepared to be extra vigilant there is the possibility of sighting minke, pilot and killer whales, dolphins and sea eagles. In spring and autumn Cathair Dhubh is on the flight path of huge skeins of migrating geese on their way to or from Iceland and the Arctic.

The coastal path from Achmelvich to Clachtoll meanders through, passing the old meal mill at Port Altanabradhan, the old millstones lying abandoned , but providing an insight into what life must have been like in the 1800's with no mechanical transport as today.

At the entrance to the estate lies Loch an Ordain where you are advised not to loiter as the Black dog of Creag an Ordain roams the lochside hollows - a two headed beast belching fire with horns, a human face and eyes like glowing peats!!

Cathair Dhubh is bounded by the North Assynt Estate purchased in 1992 on behalf of the local crofters in an historic buyout to prevent absentee landlords imposing their control over the crofters who worked there.

There are many beautiful white sandy beaches in the area, including the award winning Achmelvich beach where you can enjoy the peace and tranquillity and usually solitude.
